Nikola has issued purchase orders for ChargePoint E-skids, ChargePoint’s rapid deployment DC fast charging solution to accelerate its customers’ adoption of mobile charging infrastructure, with deliveries beginning in November 2022.

If GOP Fails To Win Back Senate, It Can Thank Trump. Again.

WASHINGTON ― If Republicans fail to take back the Senate in Tuesday’s midterm elections despite an unpopular Democratic president and high inflation, they can once again thank the coup-attempting leader of their party, Donald Trump.

The former president shaped the field by only backing those who agreed to spread his lies about the 2020 election having been “stolen” from him, and in so doing, he saddled the GOP with relatively weak candidates in Arizona, Pennsylvania, Georgia and New Hampshire.

In the sole case where a GOP nominee has refused to spread that “big lie” ― businessman Joe O’Dea in Colorado ― Trump has attacked him, actively hurting both his campaign and Republican chances to win back the chamber.

“Trump doesn’t care about the GOP. He cares about Trump,” said one top Republican consultant, who spoke on condition of anonymity. He pointed out that Trump sabotaged two Georgia Senate runoffs in January 2021 by telling his followers that Georgia elections were rigged and could not be trusted.

“I don’t recall him apologizing for losing two seats in Georgia in 2021, which put Democrats in a position to pass all these harmful policies and those losses could be objectively laid at his feet,” the consultant said. “If you’re a Republican and you’re upset about the American Rescue Plan, infrastructure spending and the Inflation Reduction Act, you already have Trump to blame. A Senate majority would have stood in the way of all that.”

Trump’s staff did not respond to HuffPost queries.

At a rally in Ohio on Monday night, Trump’s fourth in five days, he continued to primarily talk about himself, complained that he had been twice impeached, lied about his accomplishments in office, lied about the election having been “rigged and stolen,” attacked the prosecutors investigating his coup attempt and retention of secret documents ― and barely mentioned the GOP candidates on Tuesday’s ballot until the end of his two hours on stage, when he read off a list of many of the candidates he has endorsed around the country.

His aides had spent the day teasing the possibility that he would announce his 2024 candidacy Monday evening, and Trump mocked reporters in attendance as “waiting for something” ― but in the end just announced he would make an announcement a week from Election Day.

“They’re coming after me because I’m fighting for you,” he told his audience in Dayton, Ohio, as he went through a series of slides showing how he is the favored Republican for the 2024 presidential nominee.

Senate GOP leaders were hoping to entice term-limited Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey to run for Senate, but he chose not to after Trump’s repeated attacks on him for not overturning Joe Biden’s election win in that state. Republicans are now stuck with Blake Masters, who spread Trump’s election lies during the primary campaign in addition to adopting other far-right positions.

In New Hampshire, Republicans were hoping to persuade Gov. Chris Sununu to run against Democratic incumbent Sen. Maggie Hassan. Sununu, who has incurred Trump’s anger, declined and is running for reelection.

And in Georgia, Trump persuaded football great Herschel Walker, a friend since his days as a USFL owner three decades ago, to declare his candidacy early on, which drove away other potential candidates and could now result in Democratic Sen. Rafael Warnock holding on to his seat with polls showing a tight race.

“Privately, they’ve been criticizing Trump’s choices for months,” Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, said of Senate GOP leaders.

He added, though, that he doubts many will suddenly go public with those criticisms if Tuesday does not produce a Republican Senate. “Unless there is a virus going around whose main symptom is acquired courage, I don’t expect to see many virtuous converts emerging,” Sabato said.

Trump is under investigation by the Department of Justice for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol, including the scheme to submit to the National Archives fraudulent slates of electors from states where Biden narrowly won as a way to pressure then-Vice President Mike Pence to award Trump a second term. A separate probe is looking at Trump’s removal of highly classified documents from the White House and subsequent refusal to hand them over, even in defiance of a subpoena.

In addition to the federal criminal investigations, a Georgia prosecutor is looking at Trump and his allies’ attempts to coerce state officials into falsely declaring him the winner in those swing states.

Trump, despite losing the 2020 election by 7 million votes nationally and by 306-232 in the Electoral College, became the first president in more than two centuries of elections to refuse to hand over power peacefully. His incitement of the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol ― his last-ditch attempt to remain in office ― led to the deaths of five people, including one police officer, the injury of 140 officers and four police suicides.

Miami Heat have been bad against a small NBA sample size

At 4-7 it remains somewhat of a challenge to get a definitive read on where the Miami Heat stand due to such a limited sample size against the rest of the league.

Of the 11 games that have left the Heat at 4-7, eight have come in two-game sets against just four teams, with Erik Spoelstra’s team 1-1 against each the Toronto Raptors, Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings and Portland Trail Blazers. Otherwise, there have been losses to the Chicago Bulls, Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers.

The trend will continue, with the Heat’s next two a pair of games against the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday and Saturday nights at FTX Arena.

“We’re 11 games into an 82-game season,” point guard Kyle Lowry said. “So we just got to kind of chip away at it and take it game by game, one by one, and get to .500 first. And then you just kind of build from there.

“But we can’t even think about .500. We just got to think about getting the next game.”

The numbers in many ways say the Heat are who their record says they are. With the entire NBA off Tuesday, the Heat rank:

– 21st in offensive rating.

– 17th in defensive rating.

– 19th in net rating.

– 21st in rebound percentage.

– 24th in field-goal percentage.

– 20th in 3-point percentage.

– 1st in free-throw percentage.

– 15th in assists per game.

– 23rd in pace.

– 13th in assists-to-turnover ratio.

– 30th in blocked shots per game.

It has left the Heat in an 11th-place tie with the Brooklyn Nets in the Eastern Conference standings, ahead of only the Hornets, Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic.

“Bigger picture,” center Bam Adebayo said, “we just got to take it game by game. We can’t look into the future. Next game up, take it day by day. I feel like if we keep that mindset, we’ll end up on a four-game winning streak, five-game winning streak.

“So we can’t look too much into the future. We’ve got to take it game by game.”

Ugly ending

To a man, the most disappointing aspect of Monday night’s 110-107 loss to the Trail Blazers was allowing Portland to shoot 14 of 17 in the fourth quarter, with conversions on their final eight shots.

“For the most part,” Spoelstra said, “where we’ve been very good this season, in the short season, has been defending and really holding down that side of the court in the fourth quarter. And we just were not able to do that.

“That fourth quarter, it felt like we could not get a stop. And that’s very much unlike us in the fourth quarter, where we haven’t been able to string together four or five stops in a row.”

Empty feeling

When Jimmy Butler went scoreless in Monday’s third quarter, it was the first time this season he logged minutes in a period and did not score.. He did not play the fourth quarter of the lopsided victory in Portland . . .

Adebayo played all 12 minutes in the fourth quarter Monday for a team-leading sixth time this season. He leads the Heat in fourth-quarter minutes at 116:37 . . .

In going 13 of 15 from the line Monday, the Heat made it a franchise-record 10 consecutive games of at least 80 percent or better on free throws. The league record is 15 consecutive such games, by the Oklahoma City Thunder, who did from the end of 2010-11 to the early stages of ‘11-12. The single-season record is 14 by Charlotte (2017) and Golden State (2012) . . .

With Monday’s loss, the Heat became just the second team in NBA history to complete a season series against three different opponents within the first 11 games of a season, joining the 2005 Warriors, who did it against the Bulls, Knicks and Bucks within the first nine games of that season.

Cornell fraternity parties suspended after reports of drugging, sexual assault

Cornell University has suspended fraternity parties after reports surfaced over the weekend alleging that at least four students were drugged and one was sexually assaulted, school administrators announced on Monday.

In a statement addressed to the student body, Cornell President Martha Pollack and Ryan Lombardi, the vice president of student and campus life, said they learned of the alleged crimes in alerts sent out by Cornell University police.

“Like you, we are outraged and saddened,” they wrote. “We strongly condemn the actions of all individuals responsible for these criminal violations.”

The alleged incidents of drugging and sexual assault reportedly occurred at off-campus residences affiliated with registered fraternities at Cornell, according to Pollack and Lombardi, who added that police and administrative investigations into the reports are underway.

“All found responsible will be held accountable,” they said.

The decision to pause fraternity parties and social gatherings, which went into effect immediately, was confirmed on Sunday. The Interfraternity Council, which oversees some fraternities at Cornell, held an emergency meeting and “voluntarily” decided to suspend parties, according to the statement. Fraternity leaders are meant to use the suspension to “implement stronger health and safety plans,” Pollack and Lombardi said.

“No IFC-affiliated social events will resume until student leaders and Cornell staff are confident activities can take place responsible and safely,” they wrote.

Cornell police said in a Friday alert that they became aware of at least four students who recalled being “incapacitated” after drinking “little to no alcohol” during parties off-campus in recent weeks. The person who reported the allegations told police that the students were given Rohypnol, the date-rape drug known as “roofies.”

Campus police issued another alert on Sunday after a student reported that they were sexually assaulted between 2:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. at an off-campus event. Ithaca police are assisting in the investigation, according to Cornell police.

Police and university officials are encouraging anyone with information about the alleged crimes to report what they know by calling Cornell police at 607-255-1111 or Ithaca police at 607-272-3245.

Amazfit GTR 4 update brings route navigation & more

The latest update for the Amazfit GTR 4 watch has expanded its array of action and adventure features. New functionality includes route import and real-time navigation.

The Amazfit T-Rex 2 has had this since its August update. But it was the only watch from Zepp Health that supported these types of functions until this GTR 4 software refresh.

Unlike the T-Rex 2 which is mainly a device for the outdoorsy types, Amazfit GTR 4 is a more well rounded timepiece. It comes with a sleek design and lots of nice upgrades as compared to its immediate predecessor. This includes better heart rate and GPS accuracy, built-in storage for music, all day SpO2 and a larger display. Plus you still get the comprehensive features of the earlier editions, including excellent battery life. You can read our full hands-on review of GTR 4 on this link.

Update introduces route import and real-time navigation

The latest firmware systems update is 18.8mb in size. It started making its rounds yesterday so, if it hasn’t already, it should arrive to your Amazfit GTR 4 soon.

Basically, if you choose to go hiking or biking, route-import allows you to select a GPS route on a smartphone app (Strava which is good for cycling, MapmyRun for running, Alltrails for hiking/walking, etc.), set points of interest and waypoints and import all this into the GTR 4 to navigate. GPX, TCX or KML route files can all be used. Route-import also supports the option to download directly via a locations QR code.

The actual steps are as follows:

Importing can be done by Selecting route file> Opening with Zepp App> Saving route > Sending to device.

To select the imported route for navigation in outdoor sports select outdoor sports> Settings> Navigation. Then it’s a matter of choosing my route, selecting the imported route of choice and clicking one more time to use that route.

You can then navigate down unfamiliar territory with the confidence there’s less of a chance you might get lost. The real-time function lets you follow your journey on the GTR 4 display. You can also see the shortest straight line back to the starting point of your journey when you’re in a hurry.

A plethora of activities support the new navigation functions. According to the Zepp Health website, this includes: outdoor running, walking, outdoor cycling, climbing, hiking, cross-country skiing, mountain biking, BMX, outdoor boating, bobsleigh and tobogganing, sledding, ski orienteering, biathlon, race walking, snowshoeing, trail running, orienteering and open water swimming.

No sign yet of the Zepp Coach feature which made its debut on the Amazfit Falcon a few weeks ago. There’s a chance this might also arrive via a software update to other devices. The feature offers customised training guidance. Workout recommendations depend on your current fitness level, training history, fatique and more.
